OSLO, Norway (June 25, 2018) Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson delivers remarks during a reception aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96).

On June 24-26, U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral John Richardson, visited Norway, reaffirming the close and longstanding defense relationship between the United States and Norway.

The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) is the senior military officer of the Department of the Navy. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CNO is the principal naval adviser to the President and to the Secretary of the Navy on the conduct of war, and is the principal adviser and naval executive to the Secretary on the conduct of activities of the Department of the Navy.

During the visit to Oslo, hosted by his counterpart RAdm Nils Stensones, Admiral Richardson met with Norwegian Minister of Defense Frank Bakke-Jensen, State Secretary Tone Skogen and Chief of Defense Admiral Haakon Bruun-Hanssen. The two sides reiterated the long-standing and mutually beneficial defense relationship between the United States and Norway, which is especially close in the maritime domain.

Admiral Richardson expressed his gratitude to Norway for a key ally, and to Defense Minister Bakke-Jensen for the warm welcome. He commended their constructive discussions on continued defense cooperation and noted the long-shared history between Norway and the United States, both proud maritime nations.

“The defense, and especially naval, cooperation between the United States and Norway has been robust for decades and has increased significantly in recent years,” Richardson said. “The United States and Norway are steadfast members of NATO and reliable partners. Important dimensions of our relationship are truly unique and exquisite.  This visit helped illuminate new areas where we can work together even more closely to our mutual benefit and to help advance the security and prosperity of the region.”
