Statement on the Visit to Norway by Ambassador Khalilzad

U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad visited Oslo July 25-27. In meetings with Foreign Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide and other senior officials, Ambassador Khalilzad thanked Norway for its ongoing contribution to the NATO mission in Afghanistan and for its important efforts to advance the Afghan peace process.

Ambassador Khalilzad provided an update on the current impediments to the start of intra-Afghan negotiations and how all sides are working to resolve them.

The Foreign Minister and Ambassador Khalilzad discussed all key issues affecting the Afghan peace process especially the critical importance of having the full inclusion of women in intra-Afghan negotiations and to achieve a sustainable peace.
