Delivery of passports:

At the time of your appointment, kindly provide a small (C5 size) self-addressed unpadded envelope with NOK 245 in stamps (per application) so your passport can be sent back via registered mail.

We are closed on U.S. and Norwegian holidays.

Security Information

The U.S. Embassy is offering limited consular services at this time, open only for emergency appointments on a case-by-case basis.  If your travel is urgent, please contact the American Citizen Services Section at OsloACS@state.gov to request an emergency appointment.  We have opened a limited number of appointments for self-scheduling for winter 2022 to accommodate U.S. citizens who may need passport or other services when no immediate travel is required.

IMPORTANT: If you are eligible to renew your passport by mail, please utilize this option to avoid visiting the embassy.  We will not grant in-person appointments to applicants who are eligible to renew by mail and have the time to do so.

Passport Renewal by Mail:  If you are renewing an adult 10-year passport (DS-82 application) you do not need to come into the Embassy for an appointment. With Pay.Gov, you may pay for your passport renewal online, and can expect to receive your new passport within four weeks. Check requirements for renewal by mail further below under Passport Services/Renewal by Mail.  Not only is renewing your passport by mail easier for you, it avoids COVID risks for everyone!  Follow the steps further below under Passport Services/Renewal by Mail to renew by mail and pay online.

If you are unable to attend a scheduled appointment, please let us know at OsloACS@state.gov as soon as possible. We will open new appointments as often as we can and reopen canceled appointments daily.  Please continue to check our website for availability.  Please only book one appointment per person.  If you book more than one appointment, we will select one and cancel all others.

Security for Visitors
  • All visits to the embassy require an appointment.
  • Please arrive no more than 10 minutes before or after your scheduled appointment. Late arrivals will be rescheduled.
  • You must show valid photo identification.
  • Electronic equipment and removable media, hazardous items, liquids, and weapons are not permitted in the embassy.
  • Baby strollers are permitted after a thorough search.
  • Visitors are subject to airport-type screening and must empty their belongings into a 17x16x32 cm box for security purposes. Mobile phones and small items may be stored in the box during your visit. Laptops cannot be stored. Items which do not fit into this space must be stored off Embassy property.
  • Please bring only what you need with you for your appointment.

Tips for a smooth and comfortable embassy visit:

  • Dress for the weather, you may have to stand in line outside.
  • Please bring everything that you need to your appointment. Having all items that you need will eliminate the need to leave and re-enter the embassy, thus going through multiple airport-type security checks.
  • Please read the website for detailed information regarding required items for your appointment.

Reasonable Accomodation

If you need reasonable accommodation for your appointment, we encourage you to request your accommodation immediately once you schedule your appointment. We make every effort to provide accommodations to persons with disabilities and medical conditions. Reasonable accommodations vary, depending on the situation and the person’s needs.
Examples of accommodations include, but are not limited to:

    • If you require a private appointment due to a medical condition or disability, we may schedule an alternative time for you to come in for your interview.
    • If you or your child has special needs that requires a private appointment in a quiet space without distractions, we may schedule an alternative time for you or your family to come in for your interview.
    • If you are unable to speak, you may be allowed to respond to questions in an agreed-upon nonverbal manner such as using pen and paper.
    • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
    • If you have low vision, we may provide you with communications in large print.

If you are unable to provide fingerprints because of a medical condition, including birth defects, physical deformities, skin conditions, you may qualify for a fingerprint waiver for certain fingers.

  • Interview waivers are only granted in extreme situations, such as having a medical condition that requires flying in an air ambulance.
