Adam VanDervort arrived in Tromsø, Norway in August 2023 to open the new American Presence Post in the city – the United States’ northernmost diplomatic mission and only one above the Arctic Circle. This new office is focused on expanding the United States’ relationship with regional governments and business, cultural, and academic leaders, as well as report on political, economic, scientific, and cultural developments in Norway’s High North, to include Svalbard. Prior to arriving in Tromsø, he managed a similar portfolio, serving for one year as the Arctic Affairs Officer at U.S. Embassy Oslo.
Before Adam’s current assignments in Norway, he previously served as the Political and Economic Chief at the U.S. Consulate in Dhahran for two years, focused on energy and religious freedom issues. Prior to completing Arabic language training ahead of his assignment to Saudi Arabia, Adam spent a year as a Staff Assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan in Kabul. Before Kabul, Adam was the Political and Economic Chief in Valletta, Malta. Adam has also served as both a consular and political/economic officer in Guayaquil, Ecuador and London.
Originally from Virginia, Adam has a master’s degree in security policy from George Washington University and bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and archaeology from the University of Virginia. His wife, Jill, and sons, Finn (11) and Dexter (9), joined him in Tromsø.
